5 Ways to Stay Safe in the Field as a Real Estate Agent

According to the Department of Labor, 60,000 realtors have been victims of crime, rape, assault, and murder. For some of us, that can be a shocking statistic. But if you think about it, we are constantly putting ourselves in potentially dangerous situations.

Real estate is one of the only professions in which you have to meet with complete strangers in an isolated building where a crime is easy to commit, while calling for help is not. If want to learn more about two shocking examples of the stalking and cold-blooded murder of two female real estate agents, go watch our latest YouTube video:

To save you some time, here are the five safety tips I recommended at the end of that video that I hope you take the time to implement this week:

  1. Share your location with someone in your family, an assistant, or a colleague. Consider getting an Air Tag or some sort of location-tracking device to keep in your pocket so that you’re trackable while on showings.

  2. Do not host open houses alone, particularly in rural areas or areas that have a lot of acreage. Remember, there’s always strength in numbers.

  3. When meeting new clients who are not referrals, take precautions by meeting them in the office or at a local coffee shop close to the first showing. Let them know this is part of your agency’s safety protocol.

  4. Avoid showing vacant properties after dark. Remember, not all vacant properties will have electricity, and you want to have lights in case of an emergency.

  5. Take a basic self-defense course so that if engaged in a threatening situation, you have the skills necessary to escape. Self-defense tools such as small pepper spray might also be a good idea.(You’ll find my full recommendation list in the description of the YouTube video).

Implementing these five tips could go a long way in ensuring a safe and secure work environment for you and your colleagues, so be sure to share them with a friend.
